John Zurawski is a registered patent attorney who provides strategic business and legal counseling on intellectual property and technology matters, with emphasis on life sciences and biotechnology. John focuses on securing, protecting, commercializing, and managing clients’ IP assets, with concentrated experience in exclusivity through patents and regulatory designations. His clients range from major universities and research institutions to emerging companies and established companies.
John has prepared, prosecuted, and managed hundreds of patents and patent applications focused on biotechnology, molecular biology, immunology, gene therapy, virology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and biosensors. He provides patentability opinions and performs portfolio diligence for acquisition and sale-side transactions. John prepares and negotiates agreements for both in- and out-licensing, sponsored research, joint development, material transfer, and other commercial contracts. He also represents life sciences companies in preclinical and clinical development of medical products and techniques.
John teams with university tech transfer and licensing offices to prosecute, license, and manage portfolios of biotech patents. John is active with the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM), serving as Chair of the organization’s Eastern Regional Committee.
Prior to attending law school, John worked as a research specialist at the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, and pharmaceutical company Apollon, Inc. In each of these roles, John successfully wrote grant applications to fund his research projects. He also has published his work in peer-reviewedjournals.
John is currently an Adjunct Professor at Lehigh University College of Business where he teaches Intellectual Property and Intellectual Property Valuation. He has also lectured entrepreneurs at schools throughout the country about the business of intellectual property, including at the Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania and Weill Cornell Medicine.
